There is more than meets the eye with this textile exhibition.
“Andi taku e sana, Amung taku di sana’ / All of us present, This is our gathering” is a convergence of traditional and contemporary forms of expression, combining sound, visual art, and weaving. Showcased at the Philippine Pavilion during the 59th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia for over seven months, visitors from around the world experienced the exhibition’s immersive exploration of sound, including field recordings of indigenous weaving practices from different regions of the Philippines.
Prompted by artist Gerry Tan’s curiosity about “weavers weaving the sounds they produce” during a visit to a weaving house in Iloilo, the project evolved into a collaboration with musicologist Felicidad A. Prudente who produced unique notations and with master weaver Sammy N. Buhle who translated the notations into elaborate woven textiles deeply rooted in the Ifugao weaving culture. The result is a dynamic interplay of sound, visual art, and weaving, prompting viewers to contemplate the resonance and relevance of traditional art in contemporary times, how cultural information is transmitted, translated, and produced, and the significance of collaboration and dialogue in the creative process.
It fills me with immense pride and joy to share this exhibition with all Filipinos. That is why I invite you, dear friends, to visit the homecoming exhibition of ‘Andi taku e sana, Amung taku di sana’ / All of us present, This is our gathering at the 3rd floor gallery of The Metropolitan Museum. You can witness the dynamic process for yourselves. The exhibition is open to the public and free of charge until September 13, 2023, Tuesdays to Sundays, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
