The Philippine Arts in Venice Biennale (PAVB)—composed of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda—is pleased to announce the selection of the curatorial proposal titled The City Who Had Two Navels by Edson Cabalfin as the country’s representative to the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Legarda: National Greening Program Should Support Industries, Provide Livelihood for Communities

Senator Loren Legarda urged proponents of the National Greening Program (NGP) to support the weaving and biofuel industries in the Philippines by producing our own silk, cotton, and nipa mangroves in the country.

Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, made the statement during the budget hearing of the proposed 2018 budget of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the implementing agency of the program. As of 2016, the NGP had already rehabilitated 1.66 million hectares of denuded and degraded forest areas and had planted 1.37 billion seedlings for agroforestry.

Senate Receives 2018 Proposed Budget from House

The Senate of the Philippines today (September 27) received from the House of Representatives House Bill No. 6215 or the 2018 General Appropriations Bill (GAB).

Senator Loren Legarda said that the Senate Committee on Finance, which she chairs, is ready to sponsor the 2018 GAB next week after the subcommittee reports are submitted this week.

Legarda Urges Strict Enforcement, Greater Participation in Ecological Solid Waste Management

Senator Loren Legarda today called on authorities to implement ecological solid waste management plans and strictly enforce regulations on garbage segregation and disposal.

Legarda, principal sponsor and author of the Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Act, made the statement following a report by the environmental group Greenpeace that cites the Philippines as the third worst polluter of plastic in our oceans.

Legarda: 7-B DSWD Budget on Sustainable Livelihood Can Be Spent Thru Convergence

Following the guidance of Senator Loren Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is likely to fully obligate its 2017 budget for the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).

During the hearing for the proposed 2018 budget of the Department, Undersecretary Emmanuel Leyco, DSWD Officer-in-Charge, cited the intervention of Legarda to link them with other agencies of government to be able to fully utilize seven billion-peso worth of funds for SLP before it expires by the end of the year.

Legarda expresses concern over declining FDIs

SENATOR Loren Legarda on Monday expressed alarm over the decline of the net foreign direct investment (FDI) to the Philippines as of the first half of 2017.

Legarda said that FDIs are an important measure in job generation, and its decline is a cause for concern.

Legarda Concerned Over Decline of Foreign Direct Investments

Senator Loren Legarda today expressed concern over the decline of the net foreign direct investments (FDI) to the Philippines as of the first half of 2017, which was on an upward trend from 2011 until 2016.

Figures from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) show that net FDIs for the period January-June 2017 show a decline of 14% or USD 3.59-billion from USD 4.18-billion during the same period in 2016. Net FDIs in 2011 were at USD 2.00-billion, which steadily increased in the succeeding years, and were highest in 2016 at USD 7.97-billion.

Legarda on CHED, SUCs Budget: ‘Knowledge is Power’

Citing the famous adage, “Knowledge is Power,” Senator Loren Legarda stressed the importance of providing sufficient funding for higher education, especially for state universities and colleges (SUCs), to shape knowledgeable communities.

During the hearing on the proposed 2018 budget of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and SUCs, Legarda said that funding the needs of the country’s public tertiary education would encourage more students to enroll in SUCs, including in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agri-Fisheries and Mathematics (STEAM) courses.

PHL in Venice Biennale Docu Airs on September 27

The first documentary about the Philippines’ return to the Venice Biennale after five decades of absence will be aired this week on ABSCBN News Channel (ANC).

“How To Tie A String Around The World” will be aired on September 27, 2017, 8:00 p.m. and on September 30, 2017, 11:30 a.m.
