Support for Local Produce Urged, ‘Pagkaon para sa Tanan’ Launched – Legarda

April 7, 2020

Deputy Speaker and Antique Lone District Representative Loren Legarda today urged each Local Government Unit (LGU) of Antique to support farmers by purchasing their local produce and distributing them to the poor, hungry, and vulnerable sectors who need it the most during this Covid-19 crisis.

“Antique, consisting of upland, lowland and coastal areas, is geographically challenged. Livelihood is mostly dependent on farming and fishing. To avoid wastage of vegetables and other produce, I urge our local executives to buy their goods and distribute these to the poor and the marginalized communities. Our lands provide us with so much food, no one in Antique should go hungry,” Legarda said.

To avoid wastage during these times, the Office of Deputy Speaker Legarda, in coordination with the Province of Antique officials, headed by Governor Rhodora Cadiao, and local officials, is launching “Pagkaon para sa Tanan,” meaning “Food for All.” Produce of local farmers, such as singkamas, tomatoes and root crops, will be placed in “bagsakan” centers in the towns of San Jose, Patnongon, and Sebaste. The excess produce from these centers will be purchased, and subsequently distributed to the municipal mayors of San Remigio, Anini-y, Hamtic and Dao, the pilot areas for these projects. Mayors from these municipalities will take charge of distributing the produce in their respective barangays via a “talipapa sa barangay.” This project will be implemented starting this Saturday, April 11, until Sunday, April 12.

“In this time of crisis, we should make sure that our farmers are supported as they supply us with the basic nutrition for our health and for our immune system. We have to support them in every way possible,” Legarda concluded.
