Stiffer Penalties Must Be Imposed On Perpetrators of Extra-Judicial Killings

July 6, 2010

SENATOR LOREN LEGARDA TODAY SAID THERE IS AN URGENT NEED TO LOOK INTO THE GOVERNMENT’S EFFORTS TO ENSURE THAT IT ELIMINATES ALL FORMS OF EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLINGS AND BRING TO JUSTICE PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAME.
“I strongly condemn the murder of Bayan Muna Coordinator Fernando Baldomero especially that it was executed in public view where either the military or police could have been present.”
Legarda, a staunch peace advocate asserted, “We cannot allow lawless elements to take our nation down the path of anarchy.”
“The Philippine government has come under fire from local and international organizations especially the European Union for its alleged failure to put a stop to the extrajudicial killings of journalists and militants which have been perpetrated with impunity and frequency.”
Legarda said, “The spate of extrajudicial killings generates fear, particularly in affected rural communities and violates the principles of due process.”
Legarda said she will file a bill to impose stiffer penalties not only to the actual perpetrators but also to the persons responsible over such perpetrators.
