Statement of Senator Legarda on the Terrorist Attack in Barcelona

August 18, 2017

Senator Loren Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, today condemned the recent terror attack in Barcelona, Spain.

“We stand with the people of Spain and the international community in condemning the terrorist attack that has claimed innocent lives in Barcelona.  Our thoughts and prayers go to those whose loved ones perished and wish a speedy recovery among the injured.”

“This atrocious and cowardly act has no place in our civilized and peace loving societies and only strengthens our resolve to defeat this senseless attack against humanity.”

“I implore Filipinos overseas to remain vigilant and for our embassies and consulates to assume readiness in the face of these challenges.”

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), a vehicle plowed through pedestrians in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas tourist district on Thursday, leaving at least 13 people dead and more than 100 injured. It was also reported that four Irish citizens of Filipino descent were hurt in the incident.
