Loren to DPWH: Unclog Drains!

August 6, 2010

SENATOR LOREN LEGARDA TODAY CALLED THE ATTENTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYS TO LOOK INTO AND CHECK THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM SPECIFICALLY IN THE ENTIRE PROVINCE OF RIZAL AND OTHER AREAS TO PREVENT A REPEAT OF ONDOY WHERE SEVERAL COMMUNITIES WERE SUBMERGED IN AS HIGH AS 6 FEET OF WATER.
“Yesterday’s downpour already triggered flooding in Binangonan and Marcos Highway. The rain wasn’t much and lasted for only a few hours and yet, massive areas were already being submerged in water.”
“During Ondoy, most of the flooding occurred east of the Manggahan floodway. Factors that led to this was, as many saw firsthand, the blockage of storm drain lines leading to the floodway.”
“Aside from leaking pipes, our waterways aside from being old, narrow and ill-maintained are also choked with garbage.”
“The Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Climate Change emphasized, “PagASA has already issued warnings about future storms. Government should prioritize the mitigation of climate-change effects and adapt measures for affected communities, such as the construction of infrastructures like landslide-protection, flood-control, and riverbank-stabilization systems.”
“While our kababayans have become very good at adapting to the vicissitudes of their weather, they are already close to the limits of their capacities to cope, and the added effects of climate change may push them beyond their coping capacities unless real efforts are made to prepare for changes in climate,” Legarda concluded.
