Loren Inspires Women, Youth To Lead

March 1, 2010

ON THE FIRST DAY OF WOMEN’S MONTH, VICE PRESIDENTIAL BET FOR NATIONALIST PEOPLE’S COALITION (NPC), NACIONALISTA PARTY (NP) AND LABAN NG DEMOKRATIKONG PILIPINO (LDP) LOREN LEGARDA INSPIRED WOMEN AND YOUTH TO LEAD THE COUNTRY’S EFFORTS TOWARDS GENUINE REFORM.
“Let’s work together in pushing for the rights of women, the development of our youth, and the protection of the environment. Women are instrumental to nation-building and powerful agents of change,” she said.
Loren called on women to lead the fight against violence on women and children, poverty and climate change.
She further cited health, education, food security and the environment as issues “that are real and directly affecting women and their families” and should therefore be the focus of reforms in the country.
“Make use of your vote. Vote wisely. Don’t pick candidates based on celebrity or wealth, but vote for who you know WILL share your dreams and ambitions. There’s a saying that ‘mothers know best’ and I fully agree. Vote for who you know will take the best care of you, your education, health, civil and political rights,” she said.
In the Senate, Loren co-sponsored the Magna Carta for Women which affirms the role of women in nation building and ensures the substantive equality of women and men. It also promotes the empowerment of women, pursuing equal opportunities for women and men as well as ensuring their equal access to resources through institutional mechanisms and various benefits. The bill also condemns discrimination against women in all its forms. Aside from this measure, Loren likewise co-authored the Anti-Violence against Women and Children which was passed into law.
