Legarda Wants Antique to be Premier Ecotourism Destination

February 25, 2019

Senator “Inday Loren” Legarda today said she will turn Antique, her home province, into a premier ecotourism destination that offers various kinds of adventure and experience to different kinds of tourists.

“Antique is a treasure trove of natural wonders. It is known as the province where the mountains meet the sea because it is such. It is home to the cleanest rivers, verdant peaks, magnificent beaches and caves, all of which are cared for by Antiqueños,” said Legarda.

The Bugang River in Pandan is a pride of Antique being one of the cleanest inland bodies of water in the country. The province hosts several rivers including the seven major rivers of Antique—Sibalom, Ypayo, Cangaranan, Cairawan, Paliwan, Tibiao and Dalanas, as well as the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park and the Sibalom Natural Park, which are both protected areas, and 36 other marine protected areas. The Sibalom Natural Park is home to the Rafflesia speciosa, the largest flower in the world.

The historic Malandog River in Hamtic is believed to be where the ten Bornean datus first landed when they arrived in the island of Panay during the 13th century. San Remigio town has its own rice terraces, well kept by the Iraynon-Bukidnon indigenous community, and is also home to Aningalan Strawberry Garden, which is known as the “Little Baguio” of Antique Province. The Nogas Island in Anini-y, an uninhabited 24-hectare marine and bird sanctuary is ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Culasi town’s Mt. Madja-as, home to endangered species of spotted deer, cloud rat and rare species of flora and fauna, is considered as one of the premier peaks for mountain climbing. The Tibiao River in Tibiao is ideal for white water kayaking and offers a perfect backdrop for the town’s famous kawa baths. The Malumpati Health Spring in Pandan provides water to a natural pool that is so cool even during hot summer days; while Anini-y’s Sira-an Hotspring is a hot sulphur spring that is said to be therapeutic.

“These and more sites in all 18 towns of Antique are perfect ecotourism destinations. I will make sure that our local government units and the communities that host these areas will have local ordinances for ecotourism and environmental conservation patterned after the environmental laws I authored, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Ecological Solid Waste Management Act,” said the three-term senator who is also a known environmental champion.

The Antiqueña senator said that the various programs and projects she has brought and continues to bring to the province will pave the way for Antique to become a premier ecotourism destination in Panay Island and in the whole country.

Legarda has ensured that the needed infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and ports are in place, even reviving the airport in San Jose and bringing back Philippine Airlines flights to Antique. Soon there will be a FastCat route that will connect Antique (Culasi-Caluya) to Mindoro.

“We also need to ensure the safety of our people and tourists who will visit our province that is why we have expanded and improved the facilities of our hospitals and rural health centers, provided ambulance and responder units, and built multi-purpose evacuation centers,” she said.

Other projects include the construction of the Pandan Arboretum and Eco-Park, the Malandog River Rehabilitation and Development Project, and the Sibalom Natural Park Conservation and for Ecotourism Development.

To complete tourists’ experience of the province, Legarda also provides support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to boost and improve their products.

“Local food and products are always part of the experience when visiting a province that is why we also help our local industries that produce Antique’s best products such as tablea, muscovado sugar, handwoven patadyong, handmade clay pots, and handicrafts made of nito, buri, bariw, abaca and bamboo,” said Legarda.

“Antique has so much to offer, each of the 18 towns has its own beauty to boast. Tourists will be in awe of its natural wonders and have fun and would surely want to go back for more,” Legarda concluded.
