Legarda urges Filipinos to ‘Vote Vigan’
June 18, 2014Senator Loren Legarda on Wednesday urged Filipinos to vote Vigan City as one of the new seven wonder cities of the world, saying that it deserves to be included in the list.
Legarda said Vigan City deserves to be among the 28 finalists for the new seven wonder cities of the world as it is the only UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) heritage city in the country and it has been awarded as the Best Practice for World Heritage Site Management by UNESCO in November 2012.
“The carefully preserved centuries-old structures in the Historic City of Vigan bring people back in time, but the city’s prosperity tells us that the citizens and the government of this UNESCO World Heritage Site have worked well and made good use of its autonomy,” she said in a statement issued Wednesday.
She lauded the people of Vigan City for continuing the preservation and promotion of history and culture through sustainable development.
“The best practices that the people of Vigan have carried out to preserve history and promote culture while working towards sustainable development should be emulated and recognized. I call on Filipinos to support Vigan City’s bid to be one of the New7Wonders Cities,” she said.
Filipinos can vote online through the website: www.new7wonders.com/en/cities.
The 28 nominees will be trimmed down to 21 in the first phase. Voting for the first phase will end on July 7.
Only 14 cities will remain in the second phase. Voting will be between July 7 and October 7.
The voting for the final phase of the selection, wherein only seven cities will remain, will be from October 7 until December 7.
