Legarda to Deliver Lecture at ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, To Discuss Climate Crisis
July 10, 2021Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda will be guest speaker at the online webinar organized by the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore titled The Philippines and the Climate Crisis. The online discussion will be held via Zoom on Monday, July 12, 2021, 2:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. (Manila). Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda will shed light on the enormity of the climate emergency at the global level and in the Philippines, and show the urgent need for ambitious and decisive action across all sectors. Aside from identifying policy and financing options, the lecture will present the method of employing the political instrument of national power to deal with current and future crises.

About Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda:
Three-term Senator, now Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, has authored numerous landmark laws during her three terms in the Philippine Senate for environment protection, namely, the Clean Air Act; Clean Water Act; Ecological Solid Waste Management Act; Environmental Awareness and Education Act; Renewable Energy Act; Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act; Climate Change Act; the People’s Survival Fund Law; and the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (E-NIPAS) Act, among many other vital pieces of legislation. As Senator, she chaired the Senate Committees on Climate Change, Finance, Foreign Relations, and Environment and Natural Resources, among others. Her inspiring advocacy for good environmental governance has received global recognition and appreciation. She was named among the Global Leaders for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum; a Laureate and among the Global 500 Roll of Honor of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); and recognized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) as a Hero of Resilience in 2012.
She is a Global Champion for Resilience of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), a National Adaptation Plan Champion of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a Commissioner of the Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA), the Women Political Leaders (WPL) Global Ambassador for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change and the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Ambassador for Parliaments.
Additionally, she also supported the promotion of Philippine Studies abroad, namely at the School for Oriental and African Studies in London; the Ruhr and Humboldt Universities in Germany; the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore; the New York University in New York; and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain.
