Legarda supports SC TRO on Torre de Manila

June 20, 2015

Sen. Loren Legarda yesterday welcomed the news that the Supreme Court has issued a temporary restraining order on the construction and development of Torre de Manila which is obstructing the Rizal Monument’s visual corridors.

“The decision of the Supreme Court is a welcome development. The building has become an unsightly backdrop to the iconic edifice. I hope this would serve as warning to those who desecrate our heritage and think of violating our heritage laws,” Legarda said.

The senator has been encouraging Filipinos to be “heritage warriors” who will defend and conserve the tangible and intangible heritage handed down to us by our forefathers, since many of the country’s cultural treasures are begging for conservation and protection.

“The Rizal Monument in Luneta Park is a source of inspiration and aspiration for Filipinos everywhere — a visual reminder to continue the ideals and advocacies that Rizal had pushed for all throughout his life,” she said.

Legarda has filed Senate Resolution 984 asking the Senate to look into the continued deterioration and demolition of important heritage structures and trees with the end view of strengthening the implementation of the country’s heritage protection laws.
