Legarda Shares Expertise in ABS-CBN Corporate University’s First Anchor’s Training
July 9, 2019With more than 20 years of experience as a multi-awarded broadcast journalist, former Senator now Congresswoman Loren Legarda shared her expertise in ABS-CBN Corporate University’s first Anchor’s Training on Saturday, July 6.
Legarda, who began her broadcasting career in 1981 as an anchor for Newswatch, shared her knowledge and skills in the field of broadcasting and interviewing.
“We did not have any budget to produce our programs during the post-EDSA period, but we managed to tape and shoot interviews and produce them. How did we manage without money?” said Legarda.
“I learned that there are three important things in the industry: passion, which is non-negotiable; dedication, because the viewers deserve nothing less; and discipline, which encompasses everything,” she added.
At the height of her broadcasting career, Legarda interviewed some of the world’s most influential people, including world leaders such as the late Nelson Mandela and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad. She said that the ills of society to which she was exposed as a journalist compelled her to run as senator.
“The ills of society, whether it is trafficking of women or children, or the filth of Pasig River and Laguna de Bay, or domestic violence, or the pollution of the metropolis, or corruption in government, or the bureaucracy that needs efficiency, or the inefficiency of health services, all those and many more moved me to run so that I could enact the laws that could cure those ills,” said Legarda.
“I documented it for almost 20 years, and I believed that I could use my knowledge and the work ethic I gained in journalism to be a lawmaker,” she added.
The Anchor’s Training is part of ABS-CBN University’s initiative to equip anchors, reporters, and news producers with skills that will help them present the news effectively through workshops, lectures, and experiential studio activities.
It is an 8-session course that aims to address core competencies in interviewing, nose for news, storytelling, analytical thinking, strategic problem solving, anchoring and presentation, and personal branding.
