Deputy Speaker and Antique Lone District Representative Loren Legarda expressed her utmost condolences to the bereaved family of former Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. who passed away on August 11, 2020 at the age of 80.

“I would like to extend my sympathies to the family of Atty. Boy. We mourn his untimely passing, but at the same time, we express our utmost gratitude to him for the very meaningful life he had lived, and the wisdom and leadership he imparted during his stint as COMELEC Chairman,” Legarda said.

“Back in 2004, I was privileged to have Atty. Boy defend me, being my main legal counsel, when I filed an electoral protest before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET). It was a very tedious process but Atty. Boy helped me in the fight against electoral fraud. He was a brilliant and very able election lawyer, thus deserving of his appointment as COMELEC Chair, “ Legarda added.

Legarda remembered former COMELEC Chair Brillantes as a remarkable man who was committed to the rule of law and was always dedicated to his line of work, especially when he led the country’s polling body as it transitioned to the use of an automated election system in 2010.

“Atty. Boy’s unparalleled expertise as an election lawyer and his sheer passion for his work made him one of the most respected figures in electoral law and politics. He had a fruitful life that inspired many people, including me. Thank you for your untiring service to the Filipino nation, Atty. Boy. Your legacy will be etched in our hearts and minds forever,” Legarda concluded.###
