Legarda Joins Muslims in Celebrating Eidul Fitr

July 29, 2014

Senator Loren Legarda expressed solidarity with Filipino Muslims as she enjoined all Filipinos, regardless of religious and spiritual beliefs, to share in the celebration of Eidul Fitr.

Legarda, author of RA 9177 also known as the Act Declaring Eidul Fitr a National Holiday, emphasized the value of Eidul Fitr, the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice, as a way to remind the nation of the need for peace and unity.

“I join our Muslim brothers and sisters in celebrating the Eidul Fitr. I encourage non-Muslim Filipinos to likewise value the significance of this Muslim Feast as a sign of respect for other people’s beliefs and religion. Whatever religion you belong to, you can appreciate Eidul Fitr as a significant festival that rejoices in generosity, discipline, the willingness to sacrifice, and compassion; ideals that can end war and suffering,” she said.

The Senator also expressed concern over the conflict in the Middle East and Gaza where civilians, many of whom are children, are greatly affected.

“I hope that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Gaza would end now without further bloodshed. Instead of going into war, conflicting parties should strive to find the things and issues that would unite them,” said Legarda.

“Instead of focusing on the things that divide us, we should find our commonality and from there, we can peacefully discuss our differences as what the Filipinos did in crafting the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, which would lead us to a shared future with our Muslim brothers and sisters,” Legarda concluded.
