Legarda Heads PHL Delegation to 2018 Climate Change Conference in Bonn

May 4, 2018

On May 5-9, 2018, Senator Loren Legarda will serve as the Head of the Philippine Delegation to the Climate Change Conference 2018 in Bonn, Germany.

The Bonn Climate Change Conference consists of meetings of three bodies: the 48th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 48), the 48th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 48) and the fifth part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-5).

“This is an important gathering where we begin drafting the ‘operating manual’ that countries have already negotiated for the implementation of the Paris Agreement,” said Legarda.

“We have to actively participate in the negotiations because a lot is at stake for our country that is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Aside from keeping our commitments and working with other nations to meet our ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we must also ensure that financial and technical support are provided to vulnerable developing countries,” she added.

Among the activities that Legarda will attend are the following: Second Meeting of the Paris Committee on Capacity-Building; Gender Dialogue: Constituted Bodies and the Integration of Gender Considerations; 10th Anniversary Conference of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety’s (BMU) International Climate Initiative (IKI); Talanoa Dialogue Group Discussion; In Session Workshop on Long-Term Climate Finance: Experiences and Lessons Learnt from Facilitating Enhanced Access; the forum: We Are Stepping Up Climate Ambition; and the Technical Experts Meeting-Adaptation (TEM-A).

Legarda, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Global Champion for Resilience and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) National Adaptation Plan Champion, will also meet with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, as well as with the members of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Troika and German delegates.
