Legarda: Easter, A Chance to be Green Stewards

April 6, 2012

IN CELEBRATING EASTER, SENATOR LEGARDA ENCOURAGED FILIPINOS TO ENGAGE IN A PERSONAL RENEWAL AND CONTEMPLATE ON WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PROTECT AND SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT.
“The Lenten season reminded us of the importance of prayer, penance, and sacrifice. It was a period of reflection and fasting. It was the time when we gave up on small indulgences, as we strived for spiritual renewal. As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us forge a stronger commitment to show our love for God and for His creation: the environment,” Legarda said.
The Senator said that Filipinos have a moral and spiritual obligation to keep their personal lifestyles in check as human-induced actions have led to the deplorable state of the environment.
“We should respect the gift of God. To respect is to protect and to conserve what has been given to us. As Mother Earth gifts us with natural resources, we should give her something in return, a lifestyle that is sustainable and eco-friendly.”
“Let us make sure that our lifestyles and our actions do not take their toll on our natural resources. A slight change in our daily routine and a few changes in our consumption are more than enough to give the ailing environment a whiff of fresh air,” the Senator added.
“Easter is a chance to be ‘green stewards’. Whether we are at home or at work, we should try to look for ways to reduce our carbon footprints. Striving for zero waste, using electricity more efficiently, reducing the use of plastic bags, tree growing-all of these will make a difference as we all strive to work together for a greener and healthier environment,” Legarda concluded.
