Legarda: Declaration Of State Of Calamity Should Not Be Abused

March 12, 2010

NP-NPC-LDP VICE PRESIDENTIAL BET LOREN LEGARDA SUPPORTS THE DECLARATION OF A STATE OF CALAMITY IN MINDANAO, BUT REMAINS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ANY ABUSE OF POLITICAL POWER.
“I am for declaring a state of calamity in Mindanao if it will swiftly address the worsening power crisis in the region. But we should remain vigilant to prevent any abuse of power. President Arroyo should use this power to solve the energy crisis and to rescue the livelihood of farmers and fisherfolk,” she said.
The NDCC has reported that 300,000 hectares of agricultural land and P5.11 billion worth of crops have been damaged by El Nino.
Legarda, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said if government has to acquire additional generator sets, it should strictly follow the provisions of the Government Procurement Law and uphold transparency in the bidding process.
“The last thing we need in a time of crisis are unscrupulous government officials taking advantage and earning kickbacks while the rest of the country suffers the devastation of El Nino,” she said.
