Legarda Calls for Love of Environment on Valentine’s Day
February 13, 2015On Valentine’s Day, Senator Loren Legarda urged the Filipino people to declare their love not just for their significant others but also for the environment.
“Not only do we express our love for our significant others on Valentine’s day. We should also profess the same for Planet Earth. This is the perfect time to reflect on the things we love, that we fear losing due to the adverse impacts of climate change and what we can do to save them from destruction, such as our wildlife, our forests, our rivers, our seas, among others,” she stressed.
“We are fortunate to have been blessed with abundant natural resources. In fact, we are one of the 17 megadiverse countries, home to majority of Earth’s species. Unfortunately, we are also a top biodiversity hotspot, with a large number of species endangered or threatened with extinction,” she lamented.
“It is not just humans who need love. Let us spread the love by showing our concern for the environment. We must all work, in our own and simple yet big and determined steps, to help resuscitate our ailing environment. For instance, instead of buying physical gifts to give your loved ones, you can plant a tree or even hike outdoors and appreciate the beauty of nature ,” she said.
The Senator, author of landmark laws for the environment, further noted that “leaders of this country should rethink the approach on pursuing development vis-à-vis climate risks and the impacts of natural disasters. There is an urgent need to fully address the threat posed by climate change to our communities.”
“The time to act is now and we should work together for the people we love and for the future generation. Let us show our passion for the environment and create a world that is clean, green and blue,” Legarda concluded.
