Gabriela embraces Loren for VP
May 3, 2010GABRIELA WOMEN’S PARTY (GWP) TODAY RENEWED ITS SUPPORT FOR NP-NPC-LDP VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SENATOR LOREN LEGARDA FOR HER EFFORTS IN ADVANCING WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND WELFARE.
According to the Gabriela partylist, they are backing Loren not just because she is the only woman running for vice president, but because of the pro-women laws and programs she has helped accomplish, and for her platform on women’s rights.
“Loren represents the nurturer and the fighter in every Filipina.
“But more than being a woman all Filipinas can identify with, Loren is driven, someone who gets the job done. She has been an ardent supporter of women’s rights and welfare, and we believe she can do more for women once elected vice president. We support Loren in her efforts to advance and protect women’s rights and welfare,” said Ilagan.
In the Senate, Loren helped usher the passage of the Magna Carta of Women, which affirms the role of women in nation building and ensures the substantive equality of women and men. It also promotes the empowerment of women, pursuing equal opportunities for women and men as well as ensuring their equal access to resources through institutional mechanisms and various benefits.
She also authored the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act, Anti-Human Trafficking Act, Women and Children Crisis Survivors Assistance and Protection Act, theWomen Empowerment Act and the Women Empowerment in Enterprise Act.
“I am touched and honored by Gabriela’s support. Women are integral part of development and progress. We will not stop fighting until we achieve true gender balance in our society, until women in our country feel safe and secure of their and their children’s welfare. Because only then can holistic social transformation be achieved,” Loren said.
She also praised Gabriela for its efforts in protecting women and their children from violence, and for its contribution in nation-building. “Women are more soft-hearted and compassionate than men. Ang pagiging maawain, katangiang palaging kinakabit sa mga babae, ay hindi dapat tingnan bilang kahinaan, ngunit bilang karugtong ng integridad at isang klase ng katatagan. They are our advantage. And as what the Gabriela partylist’s commitment and dedication have demonstrated, the additional passion of women can help solve our problems of poverty, environmental rot, disunity and insurgency, and bring peace, cooperation, and harmony to our divided land,” said Loren.
