Dayaw Features Living GAMABA in Northern Luzon

Senator Loren Legarda invites everyone to watch the second episode of Dayaw Season 4 – Vessels of Culture on Thursday, January 11, 6:30pm, on the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), with livestreaming on abs-cbnnews.com/live and on ANC’s Facebook page.

Episode 2 titled, “Living Treasures (Part 1),” features three living Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) awardees from Northern Luzon—Magdalena Gamayo of Ilocos Norte and Teofilo Garcia of Abra, who were both awarded in 2012, and Alonzo Saclag of Kalinga, awarded in 2000.

“This episode looks into the lives and the exceptional work of three GAMABA awardees from Northern Luzon.  Magdalena Gamayo, an abel weaver from Ilocos Norte who can do many designs, techniques and color combinations that make her and her work exceptional. Teofilo Garcia of Abra makes gourd hat or tabungao with excellent quality yet he never stops innovating.  The second is a maker of hats from Abra, The third, a dancer, musician and cultural worker from Kalinga. Alonzo Saclag of Kalinga is a dancer, musician and cultural worker. His devotion to preserve his culture covers many aspects, such as dance, music, chanting, architecture, spiritual and social rituals of the Kalinga,” Legarda said.

“Through this episode of Dayaw, we can we learn a lot from these cultural masters as we admire the complexity and richness of their work,” Legarda added.

Dayaw, conceptualized and hosted by Senator Legarda, and produced by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and ANC, is a six-part, 30-minute weekly documentary series that focuses on the preservation of the country’s culture and heritage.
