Bishop urges voters: Let conscience dictate your vote

May 3, 2010

BISHOP LEONARDO MEDROSO OF THE TAGBILARAN DIOCESE CALLED ON ALL FILIPINO VOTERS TO ELECT THEIR LEADERS NOT ACCORDING TO THE SURVEYS BUT BY LISTENING TO THEIR CONSCIENCE.
“Let your pen be your weapon. Let your conscience dictate your vote on May 10,” he said.
Bishop Medroso made this appeal during the visit of NP-NPC-LDP vice candidate candidate Loren Legarda in St. Joseph Cathedral in Tagbilaran, Bohol on Labor Day.
The Bishop made this call amidst surveys that, he says, only condition the mind of the electorate.
Legarda seconded the Bishop’s statement, and urged voters to look at candidates’ track record and intentions.
“Look beyond the surveys. Choose whom you think will do good for the country and who has compassion for the Filipino people, especially the poor and disenfranchised. Look for leaders who have both experience and compassion,” she said.
Legarda is running on a platform of a pro-people governance, environmental sustainability and social justice, peace and order, access to basic social services especially health and education, and rural empowerment through agricultural productivity.
In her two terms in the Senate, she has authored laws that aim to protect the environment such as the Solid Waste Management, Clean Air and Climate Change Act; boost livelihood such as the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and Barangay Pangkabuhayan Act; protect the welfare of women and children like the Magna Carta for Women, Anti-Human Trafficking and Anti-Violence Against Women Act; and extend credit to farmers through the Agri-Agra Law.
