Legarda underscores significance of preserving arts and culture anew as PH celebrates National Arts Month
February 6, 2024Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda renewed her unyielding commitment to consistently uphold the need to preserve the Philippines’ rich arts and culture amidst modernization, noting the shared responsibility of the nation in embracing this equally important aspect of the Filipino identity.
In her privilege speech on the celebration of National Arts Month 2024, the Senate Committee on Culture and the Arts Chairperson vowed to continuously develop activities and proper legislation to promote arts appreciation and culture preservation among the youth.
“Understanding and valuing arts and culture are important in fostering a deep connection to our surroundings, a sense of pride in our roots, and unity, enabling us to embrace our diversity while celebrating our shared heritage,” she conveyed.
The four-term Senator has spearheaded various policies and laws catering to strengthening arts and culture. These include the Republic Act No. 10066 or the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, the Cultural Mapping Law, and Senate Bill No. 624, which aims to create an Institute of Living Traditions to ensure Filipino culture is kept alive in many communities.
Aside from these, Legarda has actively organized different cultural exhibits that feature and promote Philippine products, brands, traditions, and artisanship, which shows what can be achieved if cultural appreciation and preservation are promoted.
“The framing of the theme of the yearly Arts Month strongly evokes the convergence of arts, culture, and nature. One cannot exist without the other. Nagpapatingkad ng bisa ng kalikasan sa kultura dahil dito nahuhubog ang ating tradisyon at pamaraan ng pamumuhay,” the Senator said.
“Isa lang ito sa maraming patunay na kapag pinagtutuunan ng pansin ang ating kultura, lilikha tayo ng isang pambansang espasyo kung saan ang sining ay magiging malawak na bahagi ng ating kolektibong pagkakakilanlan at malikhaing pagpapahayag,” she stressed. (End)
