Legarda supports launching of Pasig River Urban Development Project

Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda expressed her full support and commitment towards the protection of the country’s natural resources and environment as she joined fellow public servants and the private sector at the launching of the Pasig River Development Project in the City of Manila with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, the project visionary.

As a staunch advocate of environmental protection, Legarda underscored the project as a fresh way to start the new year, citing this as an innovative move to transform and reawaken the full potential of the Pasig River in bringing endless possibilities to enhance the quality of life in Metro Manila.

“The rehabilitation of the Pasig River is undeniably a symbol of hope on what can be achieved if we continue to prioritize the welfare of Filipinos through a whole-of-government approach when it comes to this collaborative effort. This can really be done if we keep in mind the common goal of making the National Capital Region a safe and conducive place to live in,” the senator said.

“We owe it to our children and to the next generation to ensure this kind of commitment is sustained,” she added.

According to the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), the Pasig River Urban Development Project is in support of Executive Order No. 35 issued by President Marcos Jr. to address the urgent need to rehabilitate life along the banks of the Pasig River, its tributaries and surrounding communities.

The project is also anchored in the country’s new urban agenda, which ensures that all cities across the country are safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. Once finished, the Pasig River Urban Development Project is projected to provide a positive impact on the overall development of Metro Manila, including climate change resilience through flood control measures and resettlement projects for informal settlers. This is also in consideration of the river’s historical and cultural value.

“This is really a monumental project that can potentially make a huge difference to the lives of many. As a public servant, I extend my full pledge to ensure that this kind of project continues to thrive so that all Filipinos, not just in Metro Manila, but in the whole Philippines, can feel the positive changes yet to come,” Legarda stressed.
