Appreciating ‘Our Very Own’
July 11, 2016Through this year’s celebration of Rustan’s for the Arts, Rustan’s, the purveyor of style and design for the home as well as staunch supporter of the arts, celebrated Filipino talent and the finest of the Philippines with a showcase of handcrafted products and fabrics made by indigenous communities.
This proudly Pinoy initiative, supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Senator Loren Legarda, a tireless advocate for the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples, kicked off with a grand exhibit, titled Dayaw: Culture and Art Exhibition, on June 21 at Rustan’s Makati.
Handcrafted products and fabrics made by indigenous communities are featured in ‘Dayaw: Culture and Art Exhibition’
During the opening night, Legarda said weaving is not merely a pastime or a livelihood activity as each thread signifies the values of diligence, patience, hard work and love for culture that these indigenous communities continue to embrace and live by. She further explained that we are a historically plural and multi-ethnic society with 110 IP groups, and that each community possesses its own traditional knowledge and practices that have shaped our story as a Filipino people. Thus, it is through these cultural efforts that we preserve and celebrate these traditions.
Encouraging newfound appreciation for our weaving traditions, Rustan’s also hosted live demonstrations for the public at Rustan’s Makati and Rustan’s Shangri-La on June 25 and 26, and June 22 to 26, respectively. From the meticulous process of making cotton thread, to the unique weaving techniques and patterns of indigenous tribes, the live exhibits brought to light our proud cultural heritage.
Guests were able to see first hand the fine craftsmanship that went into some of the finer weaves through the following exhibits: Traditional Ga’dang Cloth Weaving and Accessories Making, Traditional Tikog Mat Weaving, and Traditional Bagobo Beads Making and Embroidery.
Along with the exhibit, Rustan’s highlighted proudly local designs in its Filipiniana line, aptly titled, Our Very Own (OVO), composed of home accents and fashion. Discover beautiful, luxe pieces—from delicate, capiz accessories to polished wood accents—which can help seamlessly bring together the spaces of the home.
Complementing the efforts to elevate proudly Pinoy designs, Rustan’s highlighted as well the limited edition home collection by National Artist Benedicto Cabrera, “Rustan’s X BenCab” Collection. This collection featured “Sabel,” one of BenCab’s most beloved and enduring subjects. The images of Sabel, inspired by a real-life scavenger whom the artist photographed and sketched in 1965, is presented in porcelain plates, mugs, cushion covers, fans, decorative trays, and utility boxes. The entire collection becomes a stunning display of the legendary artist’s touch and vision.
As part of its Independence Day Promo, Rustan’s offered a free Theo&Philo pouch of Chocolate Covered Mango Sprinkled with Coconut for minimum purchases worth P3,500 at Rustan’s Our Very Own.
There were unique finds and promos from Delonghi Coffee, Breville, Bosch, Hurom, Theo & Philo, Ditta Sandico and Barong II, all partners in this proudly Filipino campaign.
