MANILA — The University of the Philippines has conferred upon Senator Loren Legarda the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa on Sunday during the 107th General Commencement Exercises on Sunday of the state university where Legarda was guest speaker.
The honorary degree was given to Legarda “in grateful recognition of her four decades of exemplary commitment as a lawmaker, journalist, and an advocate of social concerns such as the promotion of social justice, human rights, peace, cultural diversity, environmental protection, universal access to education, job creation and entrepreneurship, among others.”

Senator Loren Legarda today challenged this year’s graduating batch of the University of the Philippines Diliman to never lose the spirit of inquiry and insatiable curiosity, to always strive for excellence, and to pursue the never-ending aspiration of an Isko and Iska to attain academic freedom and contribute to the betterment of this country.
Legarda, who graduated cum laude from the University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts, major in Broadcast Communications degree, made the statement at the 107th General Commencement Exercises of the University where she herself was the Commencement Speaker and an awardee of the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.

Senator Loren Legarda today hailed the President’s signing into law of the Mental Health Act (Republic Act No. 11036), which seeks to provide affordable and accessible mental health services for Filipinos suffering from mental disabilities.
Legarda, co-author of the measure, said that a law dedicated to enhancing the delivery of mental health services to the people is an integral part of the Philippine health care system given the growing number of mental disabilities left untreated due to lack of facilities as well as physicians who are trained to specialize in the treatment of these mental conditions.

Last year, the Senate Bill 1478 or the Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Act of 2017 was proposed which Senate Committee on Finance and Climate Change Loren Legarda had been known to support. The bill seeks to create a bamboo industry in the Philippines competitive enough to provide opportunities for local employment and to establish bamboo-based enterprises by ensuring that the industry has sufficient supply of quality raw materials. This is proposed to be done through bamboo nurseries and plantations.
