The Climate Reality Leadership Corps training led by former US Vice President Al Gore in Manila, drew hundreds of climate change activists. The event hoped to inform community leaders on limiting the earth’s warming and allowing communities to adapt to climatic changes that are already taking place.

At the three-day forum’s opening, Sen. Loren Legarda, UNISDR (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction) Global Champion for Resilience spoke, about the road to the “decarbonization” of the Philippines.

Legarda on New Climate Leaders: We Will Overcome This Climate Crisis

Senator Loren Legarda today said she is confident that the Philippines can lead the fight to address the climate crisis as new climate leaders emerged from the three-day training organized by The Climate Reality Project, led by its founder former US Vice President Al Gore, from March 14-16, 2016 in Manila.

“Ten years ago, climate change was considered an issue that was best left for scientists to discuss. Today, I am happy and very optimistic because we have at least 700 new climate warriors, mostly Filipinos, who will help organize action to address the climate crisis,” said Legarda, UNISDR Global Champion for Resilience and Chair of the Senate Committees on Climate Change and Finance.

Coal-minded leaders left behind by green energy growth – Al Gore

MANILA, Philippines – If President Benigno Aquino III were in the audience, he would have been inconvenienced by former US Vice President Al Gore’s presentation at the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training on Monday, March 14, in Manila.

“Carbon is the number one threat to the global economy,” warned Gore, who was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to build up awareness about climate change.

Senator Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change, raised the same concern in her keynote speech at the 3-day leadership training.

Senators give last respects to former Senate President Jovito Salonga

Former and incumbent senators gave their final respects on Tuesday (March 15, 2016) to the late former Senate President Jovito Salonga whom they described as “a humble but strong leader who played a big role in restoring democracy in the country.”

Angara described Salonga as humble and quiet “but with loud leadership” while Legarda called him “a statesman of highest degree.”

”His devotion to our nation’s freedom has allowed each one of us to stand here today to argue and agree, to debate and collaborate, to help run the nation,” Legarda said.
