Senator Loren Legarda has augmented the budget for the rehabilitation of the 71 social welfare and activity centers and 48 Bahay Pagasa juvenile detentions— which will include purchase, repair, and maintenance of amenities and facilities—and construction of new ones all over the country.
During the budget deliberations on the proposed 2018 budget of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, said that the highest allocation or 37.8% of the P3.767-trillion proposed 2018 budget is intended for social services—describing the budget as pro-people or makatao.
Senator Loren Legarda urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to ensure that communities and informal settler families (ISF) who are affected by the agency’s construction projects are provided by the government with the appropriate needs and services in resettlement sites.
Senator Loren Legarda stressed the importance of protecting the country’s coastal resources and having a comprehensive water resource management program.
Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committees on Finance and Climate Change, made the statement during the plenary debates on the proposed 2018 budget of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Senator Loren Legarda paid tribute to SGV Founder, Washington SyCip, who passed on last October 7, 2017.
“Philanthropist and nation builder Washington SyCip was a great inspiration. He was a genius who had a heart for service and for the people. He was wise, but what made him brilliant was his advocacy of promoting education. He was a globally known industrialist, but his heart remained for the children, and though he is sought-after by the country’s top businessmen and executives and sat on the boards of many global corporations and foundations, he would always humbly describe himself as a bookkeeper,” said Legarda.
Weavers and embroiderers from Abra, Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, Laguna and South Cotabato are at the National Museum of Anthropology on October 7 and 8, 2017 to share their traditional and indigenous knowledge with the public.
The weaving and embroidery demonstrations were organized by Senator Loren Legarda, with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) and the National Museum.
