Senate passes bill to protect 97 ecologically-important areas

MANILA, Philippines – Ninety-seven more ecologically-critical areas are one step closer to getting national protection.
The Senate passed on 3rd and final reading the Enhanced National Integrated Protected Areas System (ENIPAS) Act, a bill that will give national protection to treasures of Philippine biodiversity, like the Apo Reef Natural Park and the Mayon Volcano National Park.

Legarda calls for talks to effectively combat climate change

SENATOR Loren Legarda on Wednesday called for the convening of a “Summit of Consciences” in the Philippines to address climate change and its threats as she warned that “inaction and apathy will spell death and loss.”

Senate moves to declare August 9 National Indigenous Peoples Day

MANILA – The Senate has passed on third and final reading a bill seeking to declare the 9th day of August as National Indigenous Peoples Day.
In a news release, Senator Loren Legarda, chairperson of the Committee on Cultural Communities, said House Bill 4420 seeks to recognize and protect the rights of the indigenous people across the country by dedicating August 9 to their causes.
