Opening Ceremony
KatHABI: Textile Innovation Exhibit
06 February 2024
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and esteemed advocates for sustainable innovation in the textile industry.
I stand before you today as we commemorate a significant milestone in the Philippine textile industry. In celebration of National Arts Month, the partnership between the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute and my Office has led to the creation of the KatHABI Textile Innovation Exhibit, a platform that showcases groundbreaking developments in sustainable textiles.
This exhibit represents the culmination of our collaborative efforts, highlighting three key areas of innovation. First, we take immense pride in presenting the Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Uniforms, a testament to our commitment to promoting local textile production and supporting the livelihoods of our farmers, weavers, and artisans. As the principal author and co-sponsor of Republic Act No. 9242 or An Act Prescribing the Use of the Philippine Tropical Fabrics for Uniforms of Public Officials and Employees and for Other Purposes, I encouraged all agencies, to not just rely on the law and the Revised IRR to bring to fruition the benefits of this law but to come up with a roadmap that could contain the universe of all uniforms and fabric needs of all government personnel and functions.
Second, the exhibit introduces Bamboo-based Textile Ph, a revolutionary approach to textile production that harnesses the potential of bamboo as a renewable and eco-friendly resource. By exploring alternative materials and production methods, we are taking significant strides toward building a more sustainable and resilient textile industry.
Lastly, we are thrilled to feature Natural Dyes, which exemplify our dedication to promoting environment-friendly practices in textile manufacturing. By harnessing the power of nature’s colors, we are not only reducing the environmental impact of textile production but also embracing our rich biodiversity as a source of inspiration for innovation. As of this date, the DOST-PTRI continues to establish natural dye hubs, which I fully support, in various provinces across the country. Among the locations of the NatDye Hubs are in Banaue, Ifugao (Lugo Amnagad Banaue Tie Dyers Weavers Association); Balete, Aklan (Aklanon Pina Fibers Producers Association); Malaybalay, Bukidnon (Sunflower Weaving Community), and Bansalan, Davao del Sur (Eman Handweavers Association); a natural dye powder production hub in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato (Kenhullung Handicraft Federation Incorporated); and regional handloom weaving innovation centers in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte (San Jose Multipurpose Cooperative); Banaue, Ifugao (Lugo Amnagad Banaue Tie Dyers Weavers Association); Tibiao, Antique (Malabor Abaca-Pina Weavers Association); Bansalan, Davao del Sur (Tribal Women Weavers Association); and Polomolok, South Cotabato (Kalyak B’laan Care Group).
The KatHABI Textile Innovation Exhibit serves as a testament to our unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable development and promoting the growth of our local industries. Through this partnership, we are not only driving innovation but also empowering communities and advocating for a more sustainable future.
As we witness the fruits of our collaboration on display today, I am filled with hope and optimism for the future of the Philippine textile industry. I am confident that our collective efforts will inspire further advancements and pave the way for a more sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant textile sector.
I extend my deepest gratitude to the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute, our valued partners, stakeholders, and all those who have contributed to making this exhibit a reality. Let us continue to work together towards a future where innovation, sustainability, and cultural heritage converge to create a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
Thank you. Isang luntiang Pilipinas sa ating lahat!
