Co-sponsorship Speech of Senator Loren Legarda on the ad interim appointment of Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara

Today, we honor a man whose brilliance knows no bounds – Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara. His exceptional track record speaks volumes. He is a man of honor, effectiveness, and excellence.

As a legislator, Sonny has been tireless in his commitment to listening, studying, and advocating for the people he serves. His dedication has led to his authorship and sponsorship of over 340 laws, each addressing crucial issues and advocacies.

Together, we labored and passed landmark laws such as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 and the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act. As Chair of the Committee on Finance, Sonny ensured that the people’s needs were prioritized. I deeply understand the weight of his responsibilities, previously held this role myself. Amidst the pandemic, he sponsored the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act and the COVID-19 Vaccination Program Act of 2021, demonstrating his quick and thoughtful problem-solving skills.

We need a leader with academic excellence to helm the Department of Education. With Secretary Angara’s leadership, we can anticipate much-needed reforms in our education sector. His wisdom and competence make him more than ready to face the challenges of this new role.

Secretary Sonny, though your presence in the Senate will be missed, rest assured that we are with you and the Department in ensuring every Filipino child has access to quality education. We join you in creating an optimal learning environment for both teachers and students.
