Knowing that one is poised to illuminate paths even more brightly, parting ways turns farewell into a celebration.

Today, we honor a man who continues to serve our nation with diligence and passion—Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara. His career stands as a testament to what can be achieved when intellect, hard work, and service come together.

From the moment he stepped into the halls of the Senate in 2013, Sonny has been an architect of progress. With an ear always tuned to the people’s struggles and a heart committed to finding solutions, Sonny listened, studied, and dedicated his abilities fully to meaningful legislation.

As Chair of the Committee on Finance—a role I previously held and understand deeply the challenges it entails—he ensured that our nation’s budget met the urgent needs of our people, including navigating us through the unprecedented trials of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that crucial time, he sponsored the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act and the COVID-19 Vaccination Program Act of 2021—laws crafted with urgency but meticulous care that served as lifelines for millions of Filipinos.

I mention this because, truthfully, while we can highlight the more than 340 laws Sonny has sponsored and authored across various advocacies, his legacy transcends mere numbers. Sonny’s strength lies in his wisdom and understanding that his appointment to the Department of Education is not about what he has done but what he is expected to do. It is about the gravity and seriousness of the challenge we collectively face. It is about our shared responsibility in government to ensure that every Filipino child can dream ambitiously and have the tools and opportunities to pursue those dreams.

Secretary Sonny’s forthcoming role is demanding, but he is fully prepared to address this significant responsibility with resolve.

I am confident that Sonny’s dedication in the Senate will mirror his work in DepEd—always striving for excellence and pushing boundaries. His vision, competence, and efficiency will undoubtedly drive meaningful reforms in our education system.

Sonny, your colleagues in the Senate will miss your eloquence, sharp mind, and the hard work you made appear effortless. Your contributions have strengthened this institution, and as you embark on this new journey, we stand with you, ready to work together for the welfare of our learners and the entire nation.

Mabuhay and congratulations, Secretary Sonny Angara!
