Co-sponsorship Speech of Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda: Resolution Expressing Profound Sympathy and Sincere Condolences of the Senate on the Death of Former Senator Rene Saguisag
May 7, 2024Today, with heavy hearts, we gather to honor the memory and legacy of an individual who embodied selfless service to the Filipino people, of giving more to those who have less.
Senator Saguisag’s journey was one defined by humility and resilience. From an early age, he knew the value of hard work and perseverance. While walking through the halls of college and law school as a student, he juggled the weight of textbooks and the burdens of labor, working as a checker, laborer, construction site guard, and messenger, displaying an exemplary work ethic that would define his illustrious career.
Yet, it was not merely Senator Saguisag’s work ethic that distinguished him. More than his professional achievements, it was his unwavering moral compass and steadfast advocacy for integrity, accountability, and human rights that set him apart. In times of darkness, he found purpose in fearlessly
championing the cause of justice and speaking out for the abused and oppressed, even at the risk of his own life.
In 1987, he ran for the Senate armed not with riches but principle. Vowing to serve a single term, he gracefully stepped away from public office when his term ended in 1992, but not without imprinting his mark. As a legislator, he authored landmark legislation that upheld the highest standards of public service and accountability. His contributions, including the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, and the Ombudsman Act of 1989, continue to shape the fabric of our democracy and governance.
Beyond his tenure as a legislator, Senator Saguisag continued to dedicate his time and talents to noble causes for our nation. As an educator, he imbued young Filipino minds with legal wisdom and virtue. As a writer, his words danced across pages, engaging deeply with pressing national issues and sparking thought-provoking conversations.
As we bid farewell to Senator Rene Saguisag, let us remember his courage, compassion, and unshakeable resolve in the enduring power of justice and democracy. His legacy will tower on as an inspiration to us and future generations of public servants and legal practitioners.
Thank you, Senator Saguisag, for a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to guide us all. ###
