Frankfurt, Germany – Former Senator, now Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Loren Legarda proudly led the Philippine contingent during the opening ceremony of the 2019 Frankfurt Book Fair held yesterday at the Frankfurt Messe in Frankfurt, Germany.
After a 15-year hiatus, the Philippines returned to the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2015 when it was given a modest booth. In 2018, Deputy Speaker Legarda, in her capacity then as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, gave additional funds to support the participants from the Philippine book publishing industry in the world’s most prestigious book fair.

Legarda continues to highlight the world-class talent, ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Filipino people, reflected in the traditional textiles produced through synergy among workers and artisans. Piña-seda is a traditional fabric made from pineapple silk.

Deputy Speaker and Antique Congresswoman Loren Legarda visited the Philippine Pavilion exhibition Island Weather, the country’s national participation at the 58th Venice Art Biennale. This year’s participation marked the country’s fifth consecutive participation in the world’s biggest contemporary art exposition.
Legarda, the prime mover of the country’s return to the Venice Biennale after 51 years of absence, said that Island Weather explores the myriad ways by which the Philippine islands can be perceived and imagined: by evoking its geophysical characteristics, reflecting on our regard for it as a place of origin, refuge, and respite, or a location that may refer to the nation itself.
