MANILA (DWDD) – Philippine legislators called on members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to create in their countries the policy environment for effective disaster risk reduction (DRR) and enact laws that provide incentives to the private sector to build disaster resilient houses and communities.

A three-term senator, she has authored and sponsored many Philippine environmental laws, including the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 and the Climate Change Law of 2009. She is the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) chairperson for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change adaptation for Asia-Pacific.

SENDAI, Japan—United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has vowed to “continue mobilizing the necessary resources” to make disaster risk reduction (DRR) everybody’s business in the Philippines and other disaster-prone countries.
