Senator Loren Legarda is now the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (UNISDR) Global Champion for Resilience.
The appointment was announced by Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, on November 30 at the Climate Vulnerable Forum High Level Meeting at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference or COP 21.
As United Nations member states converge in France today, November 30, for the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change or COP 21, Senator Loren Legarda said that nations must agree to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
“What good is a list of achievements if Paris fails to set a target that aims for 1.5 degrees? If Paris fails to set clear long-term goals — if the outcome in Paris is mute about the absolutely undeniable need for global decarbonization by or before 2050, all the efforts of vulnerable countries will not be enough to stem the crisis,” she stressed.

Climate Vulnerable Forum High Level Event
30 November 2015
We may be vulnerable but we are not incapable.
The Philippines and other nations in the Climate Vulnerable Forum are committed to making the world a safer and livable place for future generations. We know how it is to become victims of a phenomenon we did not cause. We do not want our children or anyone’s children to be victims as well.

Senator Loren Legarda today stressed that the Philippines has all the reasons to ensure that a legally binding and universal climate agreement is achieved in the 2015 Paris Climate Conference.
“The Philippines cannot afford failure of the Paris Talks. If nations will not agree and commit to a climate deal that will limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we will experience more of Ondoy, Pepeng, Yolanda, habagat-induced rains, and stronger episodes of El Niño,” said Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change.
In line with the upcoming climate change conference in France, Senator Loren Legarda today said that nations must agree to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
“We must take urgent and aggressive climate action. The Philippines, as a least emitter of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, must not take this injustice sitting down. We need to limit warming to 1.5°C to be able to survive,” said Legarda, United Nations Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia-Pacific.
