Sen. Loren Legarda on Monday hailed the passage of the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) law, or Republic Act 10687, which was signed by President Aquino on October 15.
Legarda, one of the authors of the UniFAST Law, explained that the measure was crafted in order to expand and rationalize the government’s scholarship program and to ensure that Filipino students, especially those belonging to indigent families, are fully supported throughout their studies.
In her address at the same event, Sen. Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate committees on climate change and on cultural communities, asked local governments to preserve local culture.
One way local governments can do this, Legarda said, is to enforce Republic Act No. 9242 (Philippine Tropical Fabrics Law) which encourages local officials to use indigenous fabrics for uniforms, which would provide a steady market for indigenous communities that still produce these fabrics.
Senator Loren Legarda emphasizes the importance of Philippine heritage preservation and cultural mapping in the fifth episode of Dayaw titled “Pagbangon, Pagpapatuloy” (Restoring and Protecting our Colonial Past), which looks at the meticulous process of rebuilding and restoring our tangible heritage.
Episode 5 will air on October 29 at 6:00pm on the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC).
