Legarda Lauds Paris Climate Agreement, Hopes Nations Will Turn Commitment Into Urgent Action

Senator Loren Legarda today lauded the climate agreement forged in Paris following the two-week climate change negotiations involving 195 nations.

“The world has come together in this historic meeting to agree on the actions we need to take for the survival of mankind and of earth itself. The agreement may not be 100% the way we want it to be, but I am optimistic that all nations will be committed to doing their fair share of the deal,” said Legarda, UNISDR Global Champion for Resilience.

In 2016 Budget, DPWH, DILG To Build Permanent Evacuation Centers

Permanent evacuation centers with green design will be constructed in every region starting next year, said Senator Loren Legarda, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance.

Legarda introduced a provision in the proposed 2016 national budget to fund four (4) permanent evacuation centers or buildings in every region in the country.

First Time in Budget: Congress Funds Unpaid Pension for Spouses of WWII Veterans

Senator Loren Legarda, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, today said that the unpaid disability pension for surviving spouses of World War II veterans will now be funded, for the very first time since the law on upgrading benefits for military veterans was enacted in 1994.

Under the proposed 2016 national budget, the amount of Php2.723 Billion has been allocated for the payment of total administrative disability (TAD) pension for surviving spouses of deceased World War II veterans.

On Human Rights Day, Legarda Renews Call for Climate Justice

As this year’s observance of International Human Rights Day coincides with a critical climate change conference in Paris, Senator Loren Legarda today stressed the urgent need to address the climate crisis as a way of upholding basic human rights.

Legarda, UN Global Champion for Resilience and chairperson of the Senate Committee on Climate Change, said “the climate crisis is an all encompassing threat to our basic human rights – food, potable water, shelter, decent livelihood and life itself. If we are to uphold human rights, we must address climate change, not only by addressing its impacts but more importantly limiting global warming through deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.”

Legarda: Bicam Approves Proposed 2016 National Budget

Senator Loren Legarda announced that the bicameral conference committee approved today the proposed Php3.002 Trillion national budget for 2016 following the consolidation of the respective versions of the Senate and House of Representatives.

The bicam report will be presented by Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, and Rep. Isidro Ungab, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, to their respective chambers during the Session today for ratification before the same is submitted to President Benigno Aquino III for his signature.
