Senator Loren Legarda today said that greater effort is still needed to address human trafficking even as she hailed the Philippines’ upgrade in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report of 2016.
In the 2016 TIP Report, the Philippines upgraded from Tier 2 to Tier 1, which means that the government has acknowledged the existence of human trafficking, made efforts to address the problem, and complies with the minimum standards for the elimination of international human trafficking.
“My priority bills are those that espouse the advocacies that I have been known for—environmental preservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, equitable use of our natural resources, energy efficiency, preservation of heritage and promotion of Filipino culture and arts,” said Legarda, who is on her third term as senator.
Senator Loren Legarda expressed her full support to President Rodrigo Duterte as he was officially sworn in today as the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines.
Legarda said she acknowledges the issues that the President raised in his inaugural speech, such as the need to restore people’s faith and trust in government, and vowed to work with the administration to address these matters.
