Senator Loren Legarda today lauded the Philippines’ improved ranking in the 2019 global competitiveness study by Swiss business school IMD and said that it should serve as a challenge for government to continue improving.
The Philippines ranked 46th out of 63 countries in the 2019 IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY). Last year, it ranked 50th.
Senator Loren Legarda, as Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, sponsored on Tuesday the Senate Resolution concurring in the ratification of the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Philippines and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia Concerning the Delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone Boundary.”
The Senate has also approved the treaty on second reading.
Legarda said that both the Philippines and Indonesia are State Parties to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which gave parties entitlements to a 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for utilization of living and non-living resources.
In celebration of the “Month of Ocean” this May, Senator Loren Legarda called on national and local leaders and citizens to help save our oceans from plastic pollution by implementing and educating ecological solid waste management practices within households and communities.
Legarda said that the Month of Ocean is annually celebrated during the month of May by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57, s. 1999 and that the theme for the 20th anniversary this year is “Free the Sea from Marine Debris,” which focuses on the issue of marine debris and its effects to coastal and marine resources.
