Funding our people’s survival

As Senator Loren Legarda, who heads the special committee on climate change of the Senate, pointed out when the PSF law (Republic Act No. 10174) was passed last year, the purpose of the fund is “to ensure the consideration of climate change impacts such as stronger typhoons, heavier rains, prolonged drought and other effects in the formulation of government plans and programs.”

Mandela a ‘humble’ leader–Legarda

MANILA, Philippines — A “humble” leader was how Senator Loren Legarda remembered South African leader Nelson Mandela, whom she met when she was still a journalist.
Legarda said she interviewed Mandela during his state to the Philippines in 1997.

“The world grieves over the death of the man whose courage inspired the dawning of a new South Africa and empowered victims of social injustice in other parts of the world,” said Senator Loren Legarda as she paid tribute to former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa.

Twenty-five typhoons have already visited the country this year, with the strongest, Typhoon Yolanda, revealing the gravity of disaster risk that Philippine communities are facing.
 
Senator Loren Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committees on Climate Change and Environment and Natural Resources, said that Yolanda is the new benchmark for disaster prevention and preparedness, stressing that “like all natural hazards, Yolanda was inevitable but its disastrous effects could have been prevented or mitigated if we were more prepared.”
