Legarda urges public to ‘be environmental heroes like Rizal’

Sen.Loren Legarda urged all Filipinos on Tuesday to be “environmental heroes” just like national hero Dr. Jose Rizal who had a special commitment to environmental care and management.

She made the call as the 119th death anniversary of Rizal will be commemorated on Wednesday, December 30.

Legarda urges nations to forge ‘holistic solution’ to climate change

With world leaders in the thick of talks to produce a binding global agreement on mitigating the effects of climate change, Senator Loren Legarda urged the international community to commit to implementing a “holistic solution” to the problem.

In a video message for environmental group Greenpeace’s side event at the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris last Friday, Legarda also called on countries to seek climate justice because it is a human right.


Legarda: Stop soil degradation

Senator Loren Legarda, Senate Climate Change Committee chairwoman, sought yesterday, congressional passage of her Senate Bill No. 337 (Soil and Water Conservation Act) which seeks to promote soil and water conservation technologies and approaches for sustainable land management.

Legarda warned that the current land degradation in 13 million hectares of arable land is likely to contribute to widespread and severe poverty in the rural areas.

Senator Loren Legarda has been appointed at the Paris UN Climate Conference (COP 21) as a Global Champion for Resilience, the special representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction said.

Legarda is global champion for resilience at COP 21

PARIS, 1 December 2015 – The veteran campaigner and advocate, Senator Loren Legarda, has been recognized at the Paris UN Climate Conference, COP21, as a Global Champion for Resilience.

The appointment was announced by Ms. Margareta Wahlström, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, yesterday at the Climate Vulnerable Forum High Level Meeting.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has named Senator Loren Legarda as its first global champion for resilience during the Climate Vulnerable Forum High Level Event Monday.

Legarda was not able to personally receive the certificate of appointment as she needs to return to the Philippines to preside over bicameral conference committee discussing the proposed P3 trillion budget for next year.
