SENATOR LOREN LEGARDA CONGRATULATES DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI AFTER WINNING MYANMAR’S HISTORIC BY-ELECTIONS HELD ON APRIL 1.
“I am one with Aung San Suu Kyi in her crusade for a democratic Myanmar. With her leadership, I am confident that the transformation of Myanmar into such is imminent,” Senator Legarda, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said.
Legarda was the first Philippine official who visited Aung San Suu Kyi in December 2010 when she was released from house arrest.
Legarda further urged the Philippines to play an active role in supporting Myanmar in its crusade to restore full democracy.
“It was clear from my discussion with Suu Kyi in December 2010 that Myanmar needed the support of its neighbors as it seeks to build on its constructive efforts towards the restoration of democratic rule. We cannot just be an observer to its reform process. The Philippines, as a fellow-member in ASEAN, needs to help build on the optimism created by the developments we have seen thus far,” Legarda added.
Suu Kyi won a lower house seat in Kawhmu, south of Yangon, while her party, the National League for Democracy, had won at least 40 out of the 45 parliamentary seats at stake.
“Suu Kyi’s courage and victory inspire hope for a new future for Myanmar’s people. Her triumph unfolds possibilities for her to steer the country towards its endeavor to take the path of political reform and freedom,” Legarda concluded.
