Legarda, a three-term senator who chairs the Senate Committees on Finance, Foreign Relations, and Climate Change, is a staunch advocate of arts and culture. She supports initiatives to promote and preserve the tangible and intangible heritage and to protect the rights of indigenous peoples. She is the visionary behind the Philippines’ return to the Biennale Arte in 2015 following a 51-year hiatus and the country’s first participation in the Biennale Architettura in 2016. The French Government bestowed upon her the title of Knight in the French National Order of the Legion of Honor, while the Italian Government also awarded her the title of the Knight in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Legarda was recently conferred the Doctorate of Laws degree, Honoris Causa, by the University of the Philippines Diliman.


Philippines fails to double renewable energy capacity

The Philippines continued to rely heavily on coal and “miserably failed” to meet its goal of doubling the installed capacity of renewable capacity, 10 years after the passage of the Renewable Energy Law, Senator Loren Legarda said Wednesday.

ENVIRONMENTALIST Senator Loren Legarda yesterday declared that the past and current government failed to meet the goals of providing renewable energy under the Renewable Energy (RE) Law.

In her speech during the symposium attended by RE stakeholders in Quezon City, Legarda said that as of today, RE stakeholders continue to grapple with mixed signals from those charged with implementing the RE Law even with its passage in December 2008.


Legarda cites slipping renewable energy share

The RE law promotes the development, utilization and commercialization of renewable energy resources in the country. Ms. Legarda is one of the authors of the law.

“Having laid down the state of RE development in our country, I hope that this symposium will help surface issues that has brought us to the situation we are in now,” Ms. Legarda said during the forum, “Convergence for 100% Renewable Energy in the Philippines,” in Quezon City on Wednesday.


Enough of plastic trash

The proposed Plastic Bags Regulation Act (Senate Bill No. 430) of Senator Legarda aims to strictly regulate the production, importation, sale, and use of plastic bags. This measure discourages the use of plastic bags and encourages the use of native reusable bags made of organic or recycled materials, and reusable containers made of glass or non-toxic and non-hazardous materials.


Legarda vows to push for resumption of peace talks

Senator Loren Legarda on Sunday vowed to push for the resumption of the peace talks between the Philippine government and communist rebels.
In a speech before 4,000 new graduates of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, Legarda said she agrees with those who want the peace talks to resume.
